The option of using Zimbabwe as a neutral venue for the upcoming series between Pakistan and Sri Lankahas been completely ruled out by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) due to the high costs involved.

Initially, the PCB announced to hold the series in Zimbabwe and Abu Dhabi but backtracked later due tofinancial issues.
Now the board intends to move the venue to Sri Lanka for Tests and Abu Dhabi for the limited-over games.

A board official revealed today, “The costs are a big factor in the board deciding on neutral venues for its home series like the one against Sri Lanka. Zimbabwe was a high cost option.”

He further elaborated, “Chances are that the Tests may be played in Sri Lanka and the limited over matches in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.”
As per the International Cricket Council’s future tours programme, the series was scheduled to be held in Pakistan but Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) refused to visit the country due to severe security concerns.

International cricket in Pakistan suffered a big blow in March of 2009 when the Sri Lankan team’s tour bus was assaulted by armed terrorists in Lahore.

The deadly attack killed 7 on the spot and left many injured, including some players of the visiting team. Since the unfortunate episode, no team has been willing to visit Pakistan.

As a result of the fateful incident, Pakistan was deprived of the hosting rights to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, which was co-hosted by India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The stadiums of the country are presenting deserted and the cricket crazy national has been deprived of any International fixture on home soil.

Sri Lanka is scheduled to play 3 Test and 5 ODIs against Pakistan, in what was supposed to be a home series for the latter.
At the start of the calendar year, Team India also showed willingness to visit Pakistan but backed out from the promise as they had deep concerns about Pakistan’s exacerbating security situation.

Since 9/11, the life and property in Pakistan has been at stake with suicide attacks, bomb blasts, target killings and drone attacks rampant in the country.
