Abhimanyu Mithun, on Friday, did the unthinkable by picking up five wickets in a over in a T20 match. Mithun achieved the feat playing for Karnataka against Haryana in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy semi-final. Mithun’s five wickets in an over also included a hat-trick.

With his performance, Mithun became the only the second bowler in T20s to pick up four wickets in four deliveries, and the first to claim five in an over. Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga had picked up four wickets in as many balls during a T20I game against New Zealand earlier this year.

Mithun had an unreal game in every sense. He had conceded 37 runs in his three overs when he was called up to bowl the last over. At 192 for 3, Haryana looked well set to put up a total of 200-plus. However, Mithun conceded only two runs in the last over, including a wide, while picking up five wickets as Haryana were held to 194 for 8.

Mithun dismissed Himanshu Rana for 61 off 34 balls after the batsman mistimed a pull shot. He then outwitted both Rahul Twatia and Sumit Kuma with slower balls to claim a hat-trick. Another slower one got the better of veteran spinner Amit Mishra as Mithun equalled Malinga’s record of four wickets in four balls After wicket-keeper batsman Jitesh Saroha picked up a single, Mithun created history by sending back Jayant Yadav off the last ball of the innings.

It may be recalled that Mithun had also picked up a hat-trick in the Vijay Hazare Trophy final against Tamil Nadu, as Karnataka won the trophy. On Friday as well, Mithun’s effort was in a winning cause. A target of 195 proved too easy for Karnataka as KL Rahul (66) and Devdutt Padikkal (87) added 125 in just 9.3 overs to ease Karnataka towards victory. In the other semi-final, Tamil Nadu beat Rajasthan by seven wickets to set up a summit clash with Karnataka.
