Little Master Sunil Gavaskar turns 72, wishes pour in on Twitter

Former Indian captain and legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar turned 72 on Saturday, July 10. The cricket fraternity as well as fans took to social media to wish the great on the occasion.

Terming Gavaskar as his childhood hero and inspiration, VVS Laxman wrote on Twitter, “Many more happy returns of the day to my childhood hero and inspiration, Sunil Gavaskar. He instilled courage and belief in many young Indian batsmen to face the best bowlers in the world fearlessly. Have a great day and year ahead, Sunny Bhai!”

Virender Sehwag, who was also an opener for India, but was completely opposite to Gavaskar with regards to his approach to the game, shared an interesting tweet as always. He wrote, “Chal Phut. This is what the great #SunilGavaskar said to bowlers trying their best to get him out. Happy Birthday to the legend, Sunny Bhai. Aise hi fodte rahiye :).”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) put out a post with Gavaskar’s incredible achievements to wish him on his 72nd birthday. BCCI tweeted, “1983 World Cup-winner, 233 international games, 13,214 international runs, First batsman to register 10,000 runs in Tests Here’s wishing Sunil Gavaskar – former #TeamIndia captain & one of the finest batsmen to have ever graced the game – a very happy birthday.”

Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) termed Gavaskar as all guts and glory. CSK tweeted, “Guts, Glory, Gavaskar Super Birthday to the legend who showed the world how to face the fastest of the fast bowlers.”

IPL’s most successful franchise Mumbai Indians also wished Gavaskar on his birthday. MI wrote in their tweet for Gavaskar, “First man to cross 10000 runs in Tests, First man to hit 30 centuries in Tests, 1983 World Cup winner Happy Birthday to India’s ‘Little Master’, Sunil Gavaskar.”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah lauded Gavaskar for the courage with which he faced fast bowlers during their prime. Shah tweeted, “Happy 72nd birthday to the batting legend of Indian Cricket and the 1st ever batsman to score 10,000 Test runs. The sheer courage you showed while facing the fiercest bowlers will always remain unmatched. Wish you a great health and prosperity Shri #SunilGavaskar.”

Gavaskar played 125 Test matches and 108 ODIs for India, scoring 10,122 runs and 3092 runs respectively. He was the first batsman to score 10,000 Test runs and also held the record for most Test hundreds (34) until it was broken by Sachin Tendulkar.
