With the latest edition of the Champions League T20 all set to get underway in a few days’ time, we build up to the tournament by looking at the previous editions of the tournament. In our first part, we look at the inaugural edition held back in 2009 in India.


Teams

A total of 12 teams took part in the 2009 edition. The sides were divided into four groups of three teams each. Group A featured Trinidad & Tobago, Somerset and Deccan Chargers. Group B included New South Wales, Eagles and Sussex, Group C contained Cape Cobras, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Otago while Group D includes DelhI Daredevils, Victoria and Wayamba.


Twelve matches were played in the group round. Each team played the other in their group once, and the top two teams from each group qualified for the league round. Group A saw T&T and Somerset progress, Group B saw NSW and Eagles make it through. From Group C, Cape Cobras and RCB progressed while from Group D DD and Victoria progressed to the league stage.


League stage

In the league stage, the teams were divided into four teams each of two leagues. Each side played the other in their league once, following which the top two sides from the leagues progressed to the finals. T&T topped League A with three wins from three games while NSW came second with two wins from three matches. From League B, Victoria and Cape Cobras made it to the next round. Both teams won two games and lost one.


Semi-finals

New South Wales faced Victoria in the first semi-final at Delhi. NSW batted first and posted an impressive 169 for 7. David Warner blasted 48 from 25 while Phil Hughes made 35 from 28. In reply, Victoria were blown over for 90. Moises Henriques starred with three wickets while Brett Lee and Nathan Haurtiz picked up two wickets each.

In the second semi-final, Cape Cobras took on T&T at Hyderabad. Cobras batted first and put up for 175 for 5. JP Duminy made an unbeaten 61 from 40 and Herschelle Gibbs made 42 from 27 deliveries. T&T chased down the target in the final over, rather easily. Dwayne Bravo was the star of the show, blasting an unbeaten 58 from 34 deliveries. Skipper Darren Ganga chipped in with an unbeaten 44 from 31 balls.


The final

NSW took on T&T in the final at Hyderabad. New South Wales batted first and put up 159 for 9. Brett Lee top-scored with 48 from 31 balls. Steven Smith chipped in with 33 from 26 balls. In reply, T&T were restricted to 118 all out. Only Kieron Pollard (26) crossed 20. Stuart Clark was the most successful NSW bowler with three wickets. Lee, Steven Smith and Hauritz chipped in with two wickets each. Lee was adjudged man of the final, and the series too.
